A graphics revolution of 1998; instead of metal bases, the colorful jungle of the planet Na Pali.

Unreal burst onto the first-person shooter scene in 1998 and immediately showed that technology could be just as important as level design. The custom Unreal Engine delivered a colorful, organic environment on the alien planet Na Pali, full of dense forests, caves, waterfalls, and ancient temples — a complete contrast to the dark, metallic bases and space stations then dominant in the genre. Playing as a prisoner who is the sole survivor of a crashed transport ship, the player gradually transforms into someone capable of standing up to the brutal Skaarj race and helping the oppressed native Nali people.

The gameplay was built on exploration, atmosphere, and a surprisingly varied arsenal of weapons, the most striking of which was the ASMD Shock Rifle with its devastating combo of primary and secondary fire. The level design often rewarded patience and attentiveness rather than just quick reflexes, which noticeably set the game apart from more dynamic competitors like Quake. On Windows 9x computers, Unreal was also notoriously demanding on hardware — truly smooth performance at high detail settings required a powerful graphics card and a fast processor, so for many players it became associated with the memory of a necessary system upgrade. The game also featured a multiplayer mode, which was later expanded into the standalone Unreal Tournament.

Contemporary reviews praised especially the visuals, music, and dense atmosphere of the alien planet, though enemy AI and the game's uneven pacing were occasionally criticized. The graphics engine subsequently became the foundation for a number of other games and cemented Epic and Digital Extremes as key names in the game industry for decades to come. Today, Unreal stands as an important milestone — a title that showed a shooter could also be a visually stunning and almost contemplative experience of discovering an alien world, not just combat in narrow corridors.
