Transport Tycoon Deluxe
Transport Tycoon Deluxe is an improved release of the transport simulation in which the player founds their own shipping company and tries to turn it into an empire over the course of decades. It starts with an empty landscape dotted with a few towns, mines, forests, and factories, a small bank loan, and a decision about where to begin. Gradually you build railway lines and stations, bus routes, ports, and airports, connect raw materials to buyers, and watch the little settlement by your stop grow into a city.
The game's strength lies in how a complex system emerges from simple rules. Cargo is generated based on industrial output and city demand, and shipping revenue depends on distance and how quickly a shipment arrives, so it pays to plan routes carefully, build double-track lines, and manage signals and sidings so trains don't jam up. The Deluxe version added various climate settings, including desert and snowy environments, plus an entirely different world with its own cargo types, alongside a longer time span in which vehicles gradually age and get replaced by newer, faster, and pricier machines. Rival companies try to carve out their own share, which pushes the player to expand faster. The isometric graphics are modest but remarkably clear, and the whole simulation model ran smoothly even on the modest hardware of the mid-1990s.
The game was very well received at the time and became a long-term favorite among fans of building simulations. Its influence is visible across a whole range of later logistics and transport titles, and its author carried its principles into his subsequent projects as well. Most importantly, though, it lives on: an open-source community successor has expanded it with higher resolutions, multiplayer, smarter signaling, and a vast range of add-ons, so it's played more today than at release. Anyone who boots it up usually finds that planning just a single rail line can eat up an entire evening.
