Fish Fillets
Fish Fillets from 1998 is a puzzle game from the Czech studio ALTAR Interactive that, despite its simple premise, became one of the most beloved domestic games ever. The player controls a pair of fish agents of a secret underwater organization who move through dozens of rooms full of objects that need to be moved, tilted, and stacked so that both fish can find their way out without either of them being crushed, stuck, or drowned. Beneath the seemingly naive visuals lay a surprisingly demanding physics-based puzzle construction that forced the player to think through every step and anticipate the chain reaction of their own actions.
The gameplay required alternating control of both fish and forward planning, since every movement of one object could affect the whole room as well as the fate of the other character. Humor and distinctive voice acting gave the game an unmistakable atmosphere, which won it fans across generations, including children, for whom it was often their first serious logic game on a computer. On Windows 9x computers the game ran without problems even on modest hardware, which, together with its low requirements, helped it achieve extraordinarily wide distribution in Czech households and schools.
Both contemporary and later reviews praised the game for the ingenuity of its puzzles, its humor, and timeless graphics, and Fish Fillets became one of the foundational titles of the modern Czech gaming scene. Thanks to the game's success, studio ALTAR was able to move on to more ambitious projects, but the pair of fish agents remained its best-known and most cited work both at home and abroad. Its success led to a sequel, Fish Fillets 2, and a modern remake, Fish Fillets NG, which made the game accessible to new platforms and generations. To this day the game is a symbol that clever game design and distinctive humor can overcome the limits of a studio's size or budget.
