Dračí Historie

RPG (fantasy) 1998 malé české studio České a slovenské hry ⏱ Long · ~10–30 h

A Czech fantasy RPG drawing on Dračí doupě (the Czech Dungeons & Dragons); an isometric action adventure.

Dračí Historie (Dragon History) is a Czech fantasy game for DOS and Windows 9x that draws on the domestic tradition of the tabletop game Dračí doupě (Dragon's Lair) and transposes its world into an isometric computer adventure. The player traverses a sprawling game map, completes quests, fights monsters, and develops a character through battles with classic fantasy enemies, while the game combines action elements with simple RPG mechanics such as collecting items, upgrading equipment, and progressing through the story across several chapters. The combat and map-movement systems are simplified enough to be accessible even to players who were only just discovering fantasy RPGs through the tabletop original.

The technical execution matches that of a smaller domestic production from the late nineties — the graphics are simpler than those of foreign competitors in the same genre, but the game tries to compensate with its emphasis on a fantasy setting that was, thanks to Dračí doupě, extraordinarily popular in the Czech Republic. The game's atmosphere draws precisely on this domestic familiarity and fondness for the fantasy universe, which allowed it to reach an audience that might otherwise never have found its way to foreign RPGs, and the music aims to evoke a gloomy, adventurous mood.

At the time of its release Dračí Historie was not among the technically most ambitious titles, but thanks to its ties to a popular domestic brand it found its place in the memory of players who grew up on the books and tabletop game Dračí doupě. Today it is viewed more as a curiosity and evidence of how domestic studios tried to translate successful literary and gaming brands into digital form, rather than as a technically timeless title. For fans of Czech gaming history it nonetheless remains an interesting artifact documenting the diversity of domestic production at the time and the effort to connect computer games with the tradition of domestic fantasy literature and tabletop gaming, which formed an important part of Czech pop culture in the nineties.
