Kichikuou Rance

Strategie 1996 Alicesoft ⏱ Long · ~10–30 h ⭐ Must-play🔞 18+

A Rance spin-off in which the adventurer becomes a king ruling an entire continent.

Kichikuou Rance is an alternative entry standing outside the main Rance series, in which the picaresque adventurer becomes a king and the player takes control of an entire continent. It combines turn-based strategy with a story-driven adventure: you rule a state, wage wars, deal with vassals and hostile powers, all while following one of the most extensive scenarios Alicesoft ever wrote.

The game is divided into turns, in which you split a limited number of actions among diplomacy, construction, training, and military campaigns. Each province has its own commander, each commander has their own abilities and their own story scenes, and since resources are always scarcer than needed, it mostly comes down to choosing whom to sacrifice. Battles play out as clashes between squads, where their composition and the heroes' abilities decide the outcome. Hanging over all of this is time pressure: enemies advance on their own, and the game has a fixed ending regardless of how much you managed to accomplish. There are multiple endings depending on who you saved and what you let fall. Ruling the empire is never abstract, though: most decisions immediately take the form of a scene where you talk to someone, promote someone, or send someone to a certain death. It is exactly this link between the dry strategic table and concrete fates that turns every turn into a choice the player genuinely feels, rather than a mere click into a budget.

Visually, this is typical late PC-98 production, with colorful portraits, a clear strategic map, and many individually illustrated scenes. The soundtrack alternates marching themes with darker pieces, supporting a surprisingly grim tone not usually found in games of this type. Kichikuou Rance has a reputation among fans as the best entry in the series precisely because of how seriously it takes the consequences of the player's decisions. It is explicitly an adult game, with coarse humor and violence, but as a strategy with story it is unusually dense and still commands a devoted audience today.
