A lighter, arcade spin-off from an otherwise more simulation-focused series; drifting and flash over physics.

Need for Speed: Nitro arrived on Nintendo DS as a lighter, arcade spin-off from a series that, on the main consoles, was heading toward more realistic simulation. The player works through a series of street races, collects car upgrades, and competes against rivals in stylized city environments, with the emphasis placed on flashy driving, drifting, and instant fun rather than elaborate physics. Gradually unlocking new cars and tracks keeps the player engaged even after finishing the main campaign, motivating them to return for better times and further upgrades to their garage.

The DS version was developed by Firebrand Games, a studio with plenty of experience making racing titles for Nintendo handhelds, and it adapted both the pace and graphical demands to the console's limitations so the action stayed smooth even with a larger number of rivals on the track. The touch screen is used mainly for the map overview and quick upgrade selection, while the actual racing relies on classic button and d-pad controls. Visually, the game leans on bold colors and a stylized neon look that hides simpler car and track models well and gives the overall experience an energetic, rushed feel.

Need for Speed: Nitro on DS wasn't aiming at players looking for a simulation, but at those who wanted fast, undemanding fun under a popular brand, ideally as a companion to the versions released in parallel for home consoles. Reviews and player reactions placed it among the solid, if unremarkable, additions to the DS racing library. Today it mainly serves as a reminder of an era when major publishers regularly offered handheld versions of their hits, adapted for a different audience than the one they reached on home screens.
