Pro Evolution Soccer 2008
Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 brought to Nintendo DS a simplified but still recognizable version of Konami's football series, known for its emphasis on fluid ball movement and team cohesion rather than licensed polish. The player could choose from national teams as well as a range of clubs, play league matches or tournaments, and use basic management features to build a squad, though in a more limited form than on home consoles, where the series offered much broader management and licensing options.
Given the DS's performance, Konami had to adapt the match presentation — the pitch is shown more schematically, with an emphasis on clarity rather than visual detail, and the touch screen is used for quick passes or signaling to teammates directly on the field. Button controls remain the core of gameplay and try to preserve at least part of the characteristic feel of a series renowned for more precise ball control than its rival FIFA. The audio side is modest, with nods to typical football commentary and stadium atmosphere, albeit in a simpler form than on the big consoles.
Football fans appreciated being able to take their favorite series on the road, even though they were aware of the compromises compared to the console versions, especially in graphics and the amount of licensed content. The game fit into the wider trend of major sports licenses regularly finding their way onto handhelds too, and it helped ensure Nintendo DS had a solid roster of football titles in its library. Today it mostly serves as a historical reminder of the PES-versus-FIFA rivalry that played out simultaneously across every available platform, handhelds included.
