A real-time tactical RPG following on from FFXII; battles with flying islands and machines.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings brought the world of Ivalice into the real-time tactical RPG genre and became a direct sequel to the console game Final Fantasy XII, this time on the portable Nintendo DS. The story takes place a year after the events of the original and follows the young heroine Vaan and her companion Penelo, who, with the help of flying islands and ancient machines, set out on a new adventure full of pirates and sky realms floating high above the surface of the world, drawn there by a desire for freedom and discovery.

Unlike the turn-based battles of the classic series, Revenant Wings builds on real-time combat, where the player controls groups of units on the battlefield, summons espers, and fights against waves of enemies, similar to the real-time strategy genre with RPG elements. The DS touchscreen allows for quick movement of units and issuing orders directly on the map, giving the game a brisk pace distinct from slower turn-based battles and making it easier to coordinate a larger number of units at once without the player losing track of what is happening on the battlefield. The graphics remain faithful to the style of the original, with cuter character proportions adapted for the smaller screen, while preserving the recognizable design of the world of Ivalice and its characteristic architecture.

The game was received on release as an interesting, if not flawless, experiment with a genre change, appreciated especially by fans for the return to the world of Ivalice and the chance to continue the story of beloved characters. Criticism occasionally focused on the simplified narrative compared to the deep original, yet the game found its own audience thanks to its brisk action and attractive audiovisual presentation. Revenant Wings remains an interesting detour showing how flexibly the Final Fantasy brand can be adapted to a different style of play and a smaller handheld, without losing the charm of the world that made it famous.
