Suikoden Tierkreis
Suikoden Tierkreis introduced on the Nintendo DS a new, standalone story in the spirit of the Suikoden series, set in a world divided by twelve astrological signs and their guardian runes. The player becomes a member of a research group that discovers a mysterious rune capable of traveling between parallel worlds, and gradually becomes entangled in a conflict that threatens the very existence of reality across these dimensions, forcing the main character to take on the role of leader of the resistance, even though that was not at all what they wanted at first.
The game retains traditional elements of the series, above all the ability to recruit a large number of playable characters into the team and build one's own base, from which further campaigns are planned and the progress of individual allies can be tracked. Battles are turn-based, with an emphasis on assembling parties of several members at once and using their mutual synergies and special joint attacks, which unlock powerful combined abilities depending on who is standing in which position. Thanks to the DS's two screens, the game could clearly display the map, team information, and battles at the same time, which made it easier to navigate the game's considerably extensive content.
Tierkreis was received as a solid entry point into the world of Suikoden for new players, without requiring knowledge of previous installments, which was especially appreciated by those who wanted to dive into the series for the first time without worrying about missed context. Some longtime fans missed the connection to the familiar universe of the previous games and its traditional runes, yet the game earned recognition for its generous content and well-thought-out character recruitment system, which motivates players to explore every corner of the game. Today, Suikoden Tierkreis is seen as a dignified, if lesser-known, portable excursion into the genre that defined the series on older consoles, and as a reminder of its generous approach to character recruitment.
