Match-3 combined with garden renovation; the game that kickstarted the whole genre.

Gardenscapes combined two previously separate mobile traditions – match-3 puzzles and gradual building or beautifying of a space – into one whole that became the template for the entire later genre. The player goes through levels matching identical symbols on the board, and the stars or coins earned are then invested into renovating a neglected garden around an old mansion, cared for by a narrator named Austin, with every decoration decision permanently changing the garden's appearance.

It's precisely the linking of two loops – puzzle and building – that gives the game motivation to keep going, even though the match-3 levels themselves are often simpler than in dedicated puzzle games. Touch controls are maximally intuitive, dragging a finger across the board to connect symbols can be managed by anyone without training. Visually the game builds on a warm, fairy-tale-like aesthetic with a gradually transforming garden that visibly shows the player where their effort is heading, which was an unusually strong motivational element at the time of release.

The game is free-to-play with an energy system limiting the number of attempts and microtransactions to top up lives or special booster items that ease harder levels. Playrix later built an entire series of similar titles on Gardenscapes' success, and the model combining puzzle and renovation became one of the most copied in the entire mobile gaming industry.

Why play it: Ideal for casual players who want a relaxing puzzle with visible progress, keeping in mind that the energy system eventually pushes toward spending for faster progress.
