Colorful match-3 arcade game from Peak Games with simple addictiveness.

Toon Blast belongs to the wave of colorful blast-puzzle games that, after the Candy Crush phenomenon, showed the genre still had plenty of room for variation and improving the basic mechanic. Instead of traditionally moving tokens into rows, the player taps groups of same-colored blocks stuck together, and the bigger the cluster the player finds and removes, the stronger a bonus power-up is generated as a reward right on the game board. Peak Games added cheerful cartoon characters with distinct personalities and level art that connects the environments, giving the player a sense of traveling between themed scenes and worlds, not just plain repetition of the same screen endlessly.

The simplicity of the controls – a single finger tap on a group of blocks – makes the game an ideal candidate for short play sessions between other everyday activities, and this accessibility was key to its massive success on both major mobile platforms shortly after release. The level design gradually adds obstacles like ice, chains, crates or special blocking tiles, so despite the ostensible simplicity of the basic mechanic, the game manages to keep the player at the screen much longer and at much higher levels than anyone might expect at first glance.

Monetization follows the classic free-to-play model: a limited number of lives that refill either gradually over time or instantly for real money, plus offers of boosters and special items that noticeably ease harder and more frustrating levels. The aggressiveness of monetization is comparable to most competitors in the genre, so not extreme, but definitely noticeable and hard to overlook in the higher tiers of the game.

Why play it: Suitable for anyone looking for undemanding but visually pleasant and colorful blast-puzzle fun for a few minutes a day, keeping in mind that without regular spending the pace of progress noticeably slows down over time.
