Diablo Immortal
Diablo Immortal sets its story in the period between Diablo II and Diablo III and deals with what happened to the shards of the Worldstone after the fallen angel Tyrael's fall, linking familiar characters and locations with a new plot tailored directly for a mobile audience. The game offers a full-fledged action RPG with the same feeling of hacking through enemies, collecting loot and upgrading a character as the PC entries, transferred onto a touchscreen directional pad and automatic attack with special abilities on buttons, making it comfortable to play even with one hand. Multiplayer elements, clans, an open world and shared boss fights against world bosses make the game a living shared environment, not just a solo dungeon crawler.
Blizzard released the game in 2022 simultaneously on mobile and PC, and from day one it faced enormous criticism over monetization built on a gacha system of legendary gems, where the path to the strongest possible gear without paying was measured in months to years of intensive play. Analyses shortly after launch showed that fully gearing a character could require hundreds of thousands of dollars, which quickly made the game a symbol of aggressive mobile business practices even outside the gaming community and sparked discussion about regulating such systems. Despite the controversy, the game has a loyal core of players who appreciate the combat system, the open world and the atmosphere of a well-established dark fantasy universe with regular seasonal updates.
Why play it: Suits Diablo fans who want story connections between the entries and the series' proven combat system, but should factor in the harsh gacha monetization of endgame gear in advance.
