Game studio
Blizzard Entertainment
Blizzard Entertainment is an American game studio that fundamentally shaped three genres at once with its Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo series – real-time strategy, action RPGs, and later also online games such as World of Warcraft. Blizzard is renowned for its emphasis on lengthy development and polished detail, thanks to which its games remain among the most-played titles of their genre even years after release. Besides strategy games and RPGs, the studio was also behind the card game Hearthstone and the team-based shooter Overwatch, demonstrating its ability to successfully enter entirely new game formats as well. For an entire generation of PC gamers, the name Blizzard has been associated with a notion of dependable quality and with the motto "it's done when it's done," which captures the studio's long-standing approach to development at the expense of rapid sequel releases.
History
Blizzard entered the broader awareness of strategy fans with Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, which pitted the human and orc factions against each other and became the foundation for one of the longest-running game franchises of all. The sequel, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, expanded the series' success and paved the way for StarCraft, a sci-fi strategy game that became a phenomenon thanks especially to its well-balanced competitive gameplay and long remained one of the key titles of esports. Alongside its strategy games, Blizzard also developed the action-RPG series Diablo, whose subsequent installments defined the genre of loot collecting and endless character progression. The turn of the millennium and the following years brought the expansion Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, whose story and factions later became the basis for the massively multiplayer game World of Warcraft, followed by the sequel StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, which showed that the studio could successfully carry its classic franchises into a new generation of players and a modern online environment. Blizzard operated during this time as part of a publishing group that underwent several changes in ownership structure without significantly disrupting the direction of its flagship series. Diablo III was released first on computers and later brought to consoles, including PlayStation 3, demonstrating the studio's effort to reach players beyond the traditional PC platform. In subsequent years, the studio expanded its portfolio with the card game Hearthstone and the team-based shooter Overwatch, cementing its position as one of the most significant developers of its era, and went on to release the complete Diablo III: Eternal Collection package on Switch, followed by the entirely new installment Diablo IV on PlayStation 5 and PC.
Key People
Blizzard Entertainment has long been associated with the names of its founders, who were behind the studio's first titles and shaped its approach to lengthy, detail-focused development. This approach became part of the studio's corporate culture and was reflected in Blizzard's willingness to delay a game's release by months or years if the result did not meet its own quality standards. The specific roles of individual creators changed over the decades as the studio grew and its leadership went through changes, and a number of people from the original team later left to found their own studios continuing in a similar style of game.
Today
Blizzard Entertainment remains an active studio today and continues to develop and support its key franchises, including the latest installments of the Diablo series, the card game Hearthstone, and the shooter Overwatch. The studio remains part of a larger publishing group and continues to be among the most recognized names associated with the strategy, action-RPG, and online multiplayer genres, while still relying on the long-term support of its classic Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo series, which shaped entire decades of the game industry.
