The PC series' frantic pace translated into a top-down view; waves of enemies from every side.

Serious Sam Advance is an attempt to translate the manic pace of the PC series Serious Sam into a top-down view on the Game Boy Advance. Instead of the first-person perspective, the player controls Sam Stone from an isometric viewpoint and faces the series' trademark waves of enemies swarming in from every direction – from screaming headless beasts to massive bosses that fill a large part of the screen. The goal remains to survive and gradually clear out increasingly open arenas full of foes, while the player picks up ever-stronger weapons and ammo scattered across the levels, much like in the original PC game.

The switch to a top-down view suits the handheld hardware well – it allows more enemies to be shown at once and keeps up the chaotic pace typical of the series, without the game having to simulate a full 3D environment. The graphics are colorful and sprite-based, with striking explosion effects and large groups of enemies, while the music maintains the energetic, action-driven tone of the original game. The result is an arcade-style bloodbath centered on movement, dodging, and correctly timed reloading in the middle of a crowd of enemies attacking from every direction at once.

Reactions at the time were fairly positive in the sense that the game managed to capture the frantic spirit of its source material even from a different viewpoint, without losing the sense of being surrounded that's so typical of the Serious Sam series, though comparisons with the PC original naturally worked against the handheld version in terms of scale and spectacle. Within the GBA library, it was one of the less common attempts to bring a popular PC shooter to a pocket console without losing its core identity, and it largely succeeded, ranking among the more interesting action releases from the console's later years. Today it's a pleasant, fast-paced arcade game for those moments when you just want to shoot and dodge without thinking too much about story or tactics – ideal for short sessions between longer titles.
