A vehicular action mix from the classic arcade series; the car even transforms into a boat on water.

Spy Hunter brings to the Game Boy Advance the concept of armed vehicular combat based on the modernized reboot of the classic arcade series from the eighties. The player drives a spy car equipped with machine guns, rockets, an oil slick, and other gadgets, tearing along highways full of enemy vehicles and completing missions involving chases, escorts, and destroying specific targets. During a mission the car can also transform into a boat for water sections, adding variety to the gameplay compared to purely road-based sequences and forcing the player to adapt their tactics to the terrain.

On a handheld, this was a technically ambitious undertaking – simulating a smoothly scrolling road with numerous enemy vehicles present at once, plus explosion effects, placed considerable demands on the GBA hardware, and the game didn't always manage to keep a perfectly smooth pace. The visual presentation sticks to the action-oriented, slightly stylized tone matching the rebooted console series, while the music underscores the pace of the chases with energetic tracks reminiscent of action movies. The result is arcade action where driving, aiming, and the tactical use of gadgets intertwine in a fast sequence that unfolds on a constantly changing track.

Contemporary reactions were mixed to positive – reviewers praised the fun of the concept and the effort to bring more complex vehicular action to a handheld, while also raising objections about technical compromises compared to the console versions released simultaneously on major platforms like PlayStation 2 or GameCube. Within the GBA library, Spy Hunter represents a wave of licensed action titles combining shooting with driving that tried to replicate the success of console hits on a handheld. Today it's a fun, fast-paced diversion for fans of vehicular action, with a touch of nostalgia for the classic arcade original from the eighties.
