Crazy Taxi
A yellow cab hurtles against traffic, the passenger in the back seat shrieks with delight and punk rock blasts from the speakers — welcome to Crazy Taxi, the embodiment of pure arcade driving joy. A game that bothers with neither realism nor storytelling, only one question: how fast and how wildly can you get your fare to the destination?
The concept is brilliantly simple. You pick up customers, follow a big green arrow pointing to the goal and tear through the city at breakneck speed. Speed, drifts and daring maneuvers earn you money and time, while the clock ticks down relentlessly. This „just one more ride" loop is so addictive that it's hard to tear yourself away.
Originally an arcade hit from Hitmaker under the Sega banner, it made the jump to Dreamcast practically without compromise. The home version added extra modes and the miniature Crazy Box driving school, where you honed your drifts and tricks across a series of crazy challenges. The game thus offered far more than a mere copy of the cabinet.
An inseparable part of the experience was the licensed soundtrack featuring bands like The Offspring and Bad Religion, whose energy fit the frantic pace perfectly. Music and gameplay fused so completely that many players today can't even picture Crazy Taxi without those songs.
Crazy Taxi became one of the definitions of Sega's arcade style of that era — instantly graspable, always fun and ideal for short, intense sessions. It spawned numerous sequels and ports, but the spirit of that first wild ride remains unmatched.
Why play it: For instant, unadulterated arcade fun, where time and worries vanish the moment your first customer starts shrieking.
