Pitstop II

Závodní 1984 Activision ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h ⭐ Must-play

A sequel with a split screen for two players at once; an unusual feat on the Atari 2600.

Pitstop II followed on from the successful first installment in 1984 and brought above all the possibility to play in a split screen with two players simultaneously on the same track side by side, which was an unusual technical feat on the Atari 2600 requiring considerable skill from the programmers. Players could thus genuinely measure their strength side by side, watch the opponent's car on their own half of the screen, and fight not just for a better time but for directly overtaking their rival in real time, something that racing games on home consoles of the era usually lacked.

The basic principle remained the same as in the first installment – driving around the circuit combined with pit stops, where tires need to be replaced and fuel topped up with quick paddle presses, otherwise risking a blowout or running out of fuel mid-lap. Compared to its predecessor, the game offered improved graphics for the cars and tracks, a more refined pit-stop minigame, and a smoother feel overall, thanks to which it was among the technically most advanced racing titles on the console at the time. The split screen also meant that neither player lost track of their own car, even though the other half of the screen reduced the space available for track detail. Sound effects for the engine, brakes, and pit stops rounded out the atmosphere of a real race and, together with more colorful visuals, pushed the overall impression of the game a step further compared to the first installment of the series.

Pitstop II is still mentioned today as one of the high points of the racing genre on the Atari 2600 precisely because of the combination of the split screen, the tactical element of pit stops, and solid two-player gameplay. From today's perspective it is a title that shows how far the genre could be pushed even on older hardware, and it remains a popular target for retro racing fans today, where a split-screen duel between two cars still works as a reliable source of tension and competitive fun for two players sharing one couch.

Why play it: Fans of split-screen car duels will enjoy Pitstop II as one of the high points of the racing genre on the Atari 2600, where the pit stops still work as a reliable source of tension even today.
