RealSports Football
RealSports Football brought a more ambitious attempt at simulating American football to the Atari 2600 in 1982, as part of the RealSports series, which tried to offer a more elaborate and realistic sports experience than Atari's earlier, simpler titles. The game includes both offensive and defensive phases of play, the ability to choose plays before the snap, and individual player duels on a pitch shown from a top-down view, similar to later sports simulations. The player could thus choose between running, passing, and various types of play calls depending on the tactical situation on the field.
Compared to simpler sports games, the title offered more elaborate rules of American football, including the down system and the need to advance across the field within a limited number of attempts, which required players to plan and strategize each individual play more carefully depending on the distance to the goal line. The graphics were above average for the time – the players were distinguishable by team colors and numbers, and movement across the field was smooth, though still markedly simplified compared to the real sport and its rules. The field was also displayed so that the player always had enough space in front and behind for both the play and the defense, which made it easier to orient in fast situations near the line.
RealSports Football was among the titles that aimed to push sports games on the Atari 2600 closer to a genuine simulation, and for fans of American football it represented one of the few options available on this console. Today it is interesting mainly as evidence of Atari's effort to leverage the RealSports brand and offer players a more faithful experience, even though from the perspective of today's sports games it is necessarily sparse, slower, and limited in gameplay by the constraints of the era's hardware and simple opponent AI, yet it remains a pleasant reminder of a time when sports licenses and elaborate rules were only just coming into fashion.
Why play it: Fans of American football and sports game history will appreciate RealSports Football as evidence of Atari's effort toward a more faithful simulation, despite its sparseness and slower pace from today's perspective.
