Eye of the Beholder III: Assault on Myth Drannor

Dungeon RPG 1993 SSI Eye of the Beholder ⏱ Very long · approx. 30+ h

The trilogy's final chapter, this time from SSI; an expedition to the ruins of the elven city of Myth Drannor.

Every trilogy needs its conclusion, and Eye of the Beholder III: Assault on Myth Drannor from 1993 closes out one of the most beloved dungeon series of the Amiga era. This time Westwood Studios were no longer at the helm, but an internal team of the publisher SSI itself, and the handwriting changed noticeably. The party sets out for the ruins of the once-glorious elven city of Myth Drannor to stop an ancient evil — and for the first time in the series, the adventure also moves into more open outdoor environments.

The greater expansiveness and the attempt to break away from claustrophobic corridors are welcome, but they came at the cost of rougher technical compromises — the game feels less polished than the second installment, and some mechanics don't reach Westwood's precision. Even so, it stays faithful to the proven core: real-time movement across a grid, character management under AD&D rules, combat, and spells.

For fans of the series, the third installment is more of an obligation than a revelation — a way to bring the story to a close and experience one last campaign with your party. Retro gamers take it on knowing its weaknesses, but also with respect for the fact that it closes a chapter that helped shape the dungeon crawl genre in the early nineties.
