Sports games

A sports game takes the rules of a real sport and boils them down to controls that fit under a few buttons. The earliest attempts, from a tennis demo on an oscilloscope in 1958 to Pong in 1972, showed how: keep only what fits on the screen, which meant a ball, two paddles and a bounce. Since then the genre has pulled in two directions. One side wants a faithful simulation, where positioning, fitness and tactics decide the match. The other keeps only the parts of the rules that are fun.
The genre lasted mainly because it needs no explaining. Most people know the rules of football or tennis before they switch the game on, and two pads on one sofa are enough for an evening. It also helps that sport changes every year, with new rosters and new licences, so series such as FIFA, Madden and NBA come back as annual releases. Other branches grew around the team games: management games, skateboarding and snowboarding, and hybrids that put cars on the pitch instead of players.
Today (2015 onwards)
62 games in the catalogToday sport is often a service that runs for years. The FIFA series was renamed EA Sports FC after EA's naming agreement with FIFA ended, and NBA 2K and Madden follow the same model: online modes, player cards and cosmetic items. Smaller work lives alongside it. Rocket League in 2015 combined football with cars and grew into an esport, OlliOlli World returns to two-dimensional skating, and the 2020 remake Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 showed how well old designs hold up. VR added boxing in The Thrill of the Fight, while Steep and Riders Republic moved winter and outdoor sports into an open world.

73 games in the catalogThe Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 brought HD pictures and the internet, and sport started to behave like a service. FIFA and Madden expanded online matches and added the card-collecting mode Ultimate Team around 2009. Controls went in two directions. Wii Sports in 2006 bet on motion, so tennis or boxing could be played by someone who had never held a pad. Skate in 2007 moved tricks onto the right stick, and Fight Night Round 3 built its punches on it. Tony Hawk: RIDE, with a controller shaped like a skateboard, failed to catch on.

The arrival of 3D (1995–2004)
71 games in the catalog3D graphics brought a new camera and new controls. On PlayStation, FIFA 96 replaced sprites with polygon players animated from motion capture, and the pitch could be watched from several angles. Controls grew simpler at the same time: Virtua Tennis from the arcades could be understood in a few minutes. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater in 1999 showed that a sport did not have to be a match at all, but a two-minute run for a score built from chained tricks. More specialities followed, such as golf with a power meter in the Hot Shots Golf series, or snowboarding in 1080° Snowboarding and SSX.
Xbox Amped 2

8- and 16-bit (1986–1994)
56 games in the catalogThe NES and Mega Drive gave sport bigger sprites and more memory for rules. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! relied on large opponents with readable attack patterns, so a fight was closer to a puzzle than a brawl. Football split into two schools: Kick Off 2 and Sensible Soccer kept the top-down view, small players and quick passing, while FIFA International Soccer in 1993 moved to an angled isometric view. A branch that cared nothing for realism also appeared: Speedball 2 offered a futuristic armoured sport, and NBA Jam two-on-two teams who dunked until the ball caught fire.

SNES FIFA International Soccer
The first entry in the famous FIFA series, with an unconventional isometric view of the pitch.
The beginnings (until 1985)
27 games in the catalogIt began with arcade cabinets and crude graphics. Pong in 1972 and the first Atari 2600 cartridges reduced a sport to blocks instead of people, one button and a view from above. Boxing, hockey or tennis could be played by two people seconds after switching on. The turn came around 1983: Konami's Track & Field built an Olympic event on how fast you could hit the buttons, and Activision's Decathlon did the same by punishing the joystick. On home computers, Football Manager appeared and told the story of football through decisions and results instead of reflexes.

A800 Summer Games
Pioneer of the Olympic-games genre; a sequence of events decided by tenths of a second reaction.
