Mario Golf: World Tour
Mario Golf: World Tour is one of the most comprehensive sports titles to appear on Nintendo 3DS. The game combines a classic golf round based on precisely measuring shot power and angle with a light RPG system in the form of the Castle Club mode - there the player creates their own Mii character, raises its attributes, buys equipment and unlocks new courses. Besides realistic golf courses, there are also fantasy tracks inspired by the Mario universe, full of jumps, teleports and obstacles typical of the series. In addition to the classic swing, the game also offers special shots tied to Mario-universe characters that can affect the ball with effects reminiscent of the series' power-ups, so even the realistic golf challenges carry a bit of Mario's playfulness.
The controls are precise and leave room both for newcomers and for players seeking a deeper simulation with effects like spin or wind. The graphics use stereoscopic 3D to highlight the courses' perspective and the ball's distance in flight, which together with pleasant, relaxed music creates the laid-back atmosphere typical of the Mario series' golf spin-offs. Online features allowed both asynchronous and direct duels with other players, along with regularly added tournaments, which kept the game alive at launch even after finishing the main content. Alongside the classic tournament format, the game also offered local multiplayer via Download Play, so even players without their own copy of the game could join a match.
Critics received the game largely positively, praising in particular the number of courses, game modes and depth of control, although there were also objections to additional paid content in the form of DLC. Looking back, it is one of the most complete golf titles ever released on a handheld - it combines accessibility for a broad player base with enough mechanics for players who want to devote dozens of hours to golf, and it still plays surprisingly fresh today.
