Mini golf with Kirby; unexpectedly deep.

Imagine mini golf where, instead of a ball, you putt a cute pink sphere with eyes — one that can also get angry at enemies. Kirby's Dream Course is exactly the kind of unexpected genre detour no one would dare invent if it weren't for Kirby, and yet it works surprisingly well.

The principle is easy to grasp, hard to master. Kirby is the ball you putt across isometric, floating fields full of slopes, ramps, traps and enemies. Your goal is to collect all the enemies on the course — the last of them turns into the target hole. You have to aim, meter the power of your shot and use spin to curve the trajectory, calculate bounces off walls and predict where Kirby will come to rest. On top of that come copied abilities gained from defeated enemies, which change the ball's behaviour.

At first glance it looks like a sweet little thing for kids, but beneath the cute surface lies a tactical depth that hooks even hardened players. Calculating angles, reading the terrain and optimizing your moves for the fewest possible shots make it a game in which you can easily spend hours chasing the perfect score. And in a duel against a second player it takes on yet another dimension.

Behind the game stands the studio HAL Laboratory, Kirby's home, in cooperation with Nintendo. It's a demonstration of how willingly this brand experimented with genres — from platformers through racing to golf — without losing its unmistakable playfulness. The addictiveness here is high precisely because every shot is a little puzzle.

Why play it: Beneath the cute wrapping hides a surprisingly deep and addictive tactical game — ideal if you're looking for an original puzzle experience that's easy to learn and hard to put down.
