Mass Effect
Mass Effect launched in 2007 as an Xbox 360 exclusive first, with a PC release following only months later, and it wasn't until the third game arrived in 2012 that the whole trilogy became available on PlayStation 3 too. The sci-fi role-playing series came from BioWare, the studio that carried its house style from Baldur's Gate and Knights of the Old Republic into a full space opera. Playing as Commander Shepard, players explore the galaxy and planet surfaces via the Mako ground vehicle, assemble a crew aboard the Normandy, and make dialogue choices along a Paragon-Renegade axis that shape not just the current conversation but relationships with squadmates like Garrus Vakarian, Tali'Zorah, and Liara T'Soni, plus the direction of the whole story. Combat blended third-person cover shooting with squad commands and tactical pauses, so the first game sat closer to tactical RPG than action shooter.
The second game (2010) noticeably sped up combat, streamlined the inventory, and built its structure around assembling and earning the loyalty of a team ahead of a suicide mission in its finale, which made it the series' high point for many players and critics alike. Mass Effect 3 (2012) closed out the war against the Reapers, added cooperative multiplayer with a horde mode and a shift toward faster action, but is best remembered for the uproar over its original ending, which EA and BioWare later expanded with the additional Extended Cut DLC. A defining trait of the whole trilogy was carrying save files between games — choices from the first title echoed all the way into the last, down to the fate of individual characters and entire factions, an unusual approach for big-budget studio games at the time that also influenced other BioWare series like Dragon Age.
After a pause came Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017) from BioWare Montreal, with a new crew, a different corner of the universe called Andromeda, and a more open take on planetary exploration; the game launched with technical rough edges and animation glitches and never matched the original trilogy's reception, contributing to a long, further delay for any follow-up. Alongside the main entries, mobile spin-offs like Mass Effect Galaxy and Mass Effect: Infiltrator filled in story gaps between games, and a number of comics and novels expanded the universe through supporting characters.
In 2021 the remastered Legendary Edition bundled and visually upgraded the original trilogy together with most of its add-on content for newer consoles and PC, though without the third game's multiplayer, showing just how strongly players still cared about Shepard's story. Even after years of quiet, the series is still remembered as an example of how far player choice can reach across a large game saga, and its system of moral choices and romances shaped a number of later RPGs.
