Assembling a team of specialists against the Collectors culminates in the legendary suicide mission.

Mass Effect 2 continued the story of Commander Shepard, who, following the events of the first game, finds themselves in the service of the mysterious organization Cerberus, tasked with assembling a team of specialists against a threat known as the Collectors, who are abducting entire human colonies. Compared to the first game, this entry simplified the RPG elements in favor of more action-oriented cover-based combat and focused heavily on building relationships with crew members, whose personal quests and loyalty directly affect the outcome of the final mission, nicknamed by fans the suicide mission, in which an insufficiently prepared team risks losing even key characters. The game allowed importing saved characters from the first game, so decisions from the previous game affected dialogue and available options in the sequel.

Structurally, this was a major shift for the series toward cinematic, dialogue-driven storytelling with a dialogue wheel and the Paragon and Renegade system, which allowed players to shape Shepard's morality and approach to resolving conflicts. The Mass Effect sci-fi world, full of different races, politics, and ethical dilemmas, took on a darker and more urgent tone in this entry, underscored by atmospheric music and cinematic direction of the conversations. With this installment, BioWare strengthened its focus on a connected story across the trilogy, where choices from the previous game affected the world in the sequel.

Mass Effect 2 is often cited as the peak of the trilogy thanks to its balanced mix of action, story, and attention to crew characters, and its final mission ranks among the most-cited moments in the genre. On PC the game benefited from more intuitive controls and improved graphics compared to the console versions, and it is still considered one of the most significant sci-fi RPG titles of its time. Expansions such as Lair of the Shadow Broker and Overlord later added further story missions and expanded the background of both supporting crew members and the Mass Effect universe itself.

Why play it: A balanced mix of action, story, and attention to crew characters makes it the peak of the trilogy and one of the most significant sci-fi RPG titles of its time, especially with expansions like Lair of the Shadow Broker.
