The only entry of the space trilogy on this console; rallying allies against the Reapers.

Mass Effect 3: Special Edition was the sole representative of the famous space trilogy on Wii U, and at the same time a demonstration of how complicated it was to bring a game to a console whose previous installments had never appeared there. The story follows Commander Shepard at the moment the Reapers invade the galaxy and humanity, along with the other races, faces extinction. The main task is to gather allies, resolve old disputes between nations, and assemble a fleet that has the only real chance at a counterattack. The game combines a cover-based shooter with class-specific skills, gear management, and extensive dialogue in which the fates of entire civilizations are decided.

Because the first two installments were missing on the platform, the release included an interactive comic summarizing prior events and letting the player make key decisions from the past. It was an elegant compromise, even if it couldn't replace dozens of hours of relationships built up over the previous games. The package also included the Extended Cut expansion, which reworked the game's ending after a wave of criticism, and the From Ashes add-on with a new squad member. The Wii U controller served as a map, mission list, loadout, and quick skill selection, which made combat noticeably more pleasant since the player didn't have to keep opening menus.

Atmospherically, the third Mass Effect ranks among the series' heaviest installments; it's a game about retreat, sacrifice, and farewell, and its music, built on dark synthesizer textures, underscores that. Reception of the Wii U version was decent; reviewers praised the content and the use of the second screen but pointed out the missing multiplayer co-op mode and the game's late arrival on the market. Today it's more of a collector's curiosity, since the whole trilogy is available together elsewhere, but as a standalone experience the game still works thanks to its strong characters and serious tone. It also remains the only place where Wii U owners could encounter the series at all.
