Arkanoid
Arkanoid grew out of mid-1980s arcade cabinets and stands among the most influential entries in what's loosely called the "breakout" genre – guiding a paddle, bouncing a ball, and smashing rows of bricks. Beyond the original Atari concept, Taito added its own ship, the Vaus, plus collectible power-ups that widened the paddle, granted laser fire, temporarily caught the ball, or split it into several balls at once, all wrapped around dozens of levels capped by a battle with the mysterious boss Doh. That mix of simple rules, visible level-to-level progress, and rising difficulty made it one of the most copied arcade templates ever – practically every brick-breaker since traces back to what Arkanoid introduced.
The cabinet's success forced a direct sequel, Arkanoid: Revenge of Doh, and a decade later Arkanoid Returns, while in between the game spread across a long line of home ports on the Atari 8-bit, Commodore 64, NES, Game Boy, and SNES. Each version had to cope with different control options – from ordinary joysticks to dedicated paddle controllers built for the precise, fluid paddle movement the gameplay depended on. Graphics and music varied with each machine's power, but the core loop stayed unchanged.
Thanks to its easy accessibility, instantly readable rules, and addictive progression, Arkanoid became synonymous with the whole brick-breaking genre, and its mechanics – power-ups, escalating difficulty, an end boss – still resurface in countless clones, freeware variants, and mobile games decades after the original.
