Fahrenheit
Fahrenheit, released in North America under the title Indigo Prophecy, is a 2005 interactive cinematic adventure from French studio Quantic Dream, led by David Cage, who later became famous for Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human. The game opens with a scene in which the main character, Lucas Kane, wakes from a trance under the influence of some mysterious force with no apparent reason, having just murdered an unknown man in a restaurant restroom, and the player must clear the scene of evidence as quickly as possible before the police arrive - only to soon after take control of the investigating detectives, hunting for Lucas himself.
The narrative was built on fast quick-time events during action sequences and a set of moral choices affecting the direction of a paranormal story full of conspiracies, supernatural forces, and questions about the line between guilt and innocence. The controls were unconventional from the start - the player moved an analog stick to mimic the character's own actions, from wiping up blood to searching through cabinets, physically drawing them into both mundane and high-tension moments. The game also tracked characters' mental state with a special meter that dropped during tense moments and had to be maintained through ordinary activities like sleeping or eating, further reinforcing a sense of oppressive hopelessness.
It was precisely this structure - alternating perspectives between victim and investigators, and a cinematic, almost serial-style presentation with a split screen - that felt utterly groundbreaking in 2005 and foreshadowed Cage's later, even more elaborate interactive dramas. Critics praised the originality of the storytelling and the atmosphere, though they faulted the weakening second half of the story as it slid into supernatural cliché. Fahrenheit is viewed today as a key pioneering title of the interactive-film genre on consoles. The boldness of combining a detective thriller with supernatural elements and a wholly unconventional, serialized narrative structure made it one of the most talked-about titles of its time.
