A stealth action game with psychic powers from the creators of TimeSplitters; a departure from shooters.

Second Sight is a 2004 action-stealth game created by the British studio Free Radical Design, best known for the TimeSplitters series, as its attempt to branch out from pure shooters. The player takes on the role of John Vattic, a scientist who wakes up in a military facility with no memories but newly acquired psychic powers such as telekinesis, healing, invisibility, and mind control over other people, gradually piecing together the mosaic of his own past through intertwining timelines told via flashbacks.

The gameplay combined quiet sneaking around guards with the option to break into combat backed by psychic powers if discovered, letting the player choose at any moment whether to resolve a situation discreetly or by force, which gave the game a pleasant flexibility of approach. All abilities drew from a shared psychic energy meter, though, so the player had to weigh whether to spend it on invisibility, healing, or a direct attack. The non-linear narrative alternating between past and present was unusual at the time of release and pushed the game closer to a psychological thriller than an ordinary action shooter, matched by the darker, conspiratorial atmosphere of the whole story, reinforced by clean, slightly comic-book-styled visuals with bold outlines.

Critics praised the original genre combination, the elaborate system of psychic abilities, and the unconventional narrative approach, which cemented Second Sight as one of the most interesting and most underrated experiments of its generation, even though its commercial success remained rather modest and the game soon faded into the shadow of louder titles of its time. The freedom to choose between a quiet solution and open combat using psychic powers foreshadowed a trend that would fully take hold in action games only many years later.
