Alan Wake II

Akční horor 2023 Remedy Entertainment Alan Wake ⏱ Long · ~10–30 h ⭐ Must-play🔞 18+

A survival horror sequel thirteen years later; two storylines linked by the Dark Place and Bright Falls.

Alan Wake II is a survival horror sequel to the cult original, arriving thirteen years later, and on Xbox Series X|S it makes full use of next-generation power for photorealistic environments and elaborate dynamic lighting that is absolutely essential to the atmosphere of the entire game and simply couldn't have been achieved on older hardware. The story unfolds along two parallel lines – FBI agent Saga Anderson investigates a series of ritual murders in the town of Bright Falls, while writer Alan Wake has remained trapped for thirteen years in a dark version of New York called the Dark Place, from which he tries to escape by rewriting his own unfinished story on an old typewriter.

Remedy Entertainment combined tense investigative segments, in which Saga connects clues and builds theories about the perpetrator on an imagined mind-map board, with a classic horror combat system where flashlight beams weaken shadow enemies before a finishing shot from a weapon. Visually, the game blends live-action footage with the game engine so seamlessly that the line between film and game nearly disappears, reinforcing a dark, unsettling atmosphere inspired by American horror, television series, and 1940s noir aesthetics.

Critics received the game as one of the pinnacles of the genre, praising in particular its bold narrative structure, unforgettable musical numbers, and technical execution on the new generation of consoles. Despite more modest commercial success owing to the game's demanding nature and specific tone, Alan Wake II is now regarded as one of the most ambitious horror titles of its generation and has cemented Remedy's reputation as a studio with a distinctive, unmistakable authorial voice. Optional connections to previous Remedy titles, including references to Control, further hint at a shared fictional universe the studio has been building across its games for years.

Why play it: For fans of bold storytelling, unforgettable musical numbers, and Remedy's connected universe, it's one of the most ambitious horror titles of its generation, despite its demanding and distinctive tone.
