Alan Wake
Alan Wake, from Finnish studio Remedy Entertainment (previously known for the Max Payne series), launched in 2010 for Xbox 360 and PC as a psychological thriller straddling action and horror. Writer Alan Wake searches the town of Bright Falls for his missing wife and confronts a darkness that only light can weaken — a flashlight serves as the main weapon, stripping enemies' shield before gunfire finishes the job. The game was split into episodes in the style of a TV show, complete with a "previously on" recap at the start of each chapter, and the story was fleshed out further by collectible manuscript pages that foreshadowed events the player had yet to experience.
The spin-off Alan Wake's American Nightmare (2012) pushed the series toward a more action-focused, arcade feel built around fending off waves of enemies, and expanded on the villain Mr. Scratch as the hero's dark double. A long gap followed, during which Remedy tied Alan Wake's world into Control (2019) and began building a shared fiction across its games; Alan Wake Remastered (2021) meanwhile brought the original game's updated visuals to a new generation of players.
The return of a full sequel came with Alan Wake 2 (2023), a survival-horror follow-up with dual protagonists — Alan and FBI agent Saga Anderson — and live-action sequences, praised for its atmosphere, narrative complexity and willingness to experiment with form. The series remains valued above all for its strong storytelling and dense atmosphere blending survival horror with psychological thriller, even though the first game was sometimes criticized for repetitive combat.
