Disco Elysium: The Final Cut
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is a detective RPG from the Estonian studio ZA/UM that, instead of sword-and-magic combat, focuses entirely on dialogue, thought, and the inner voices of its protagonist. The player wakes up as an amnesiac detective in the decaying port city of Revachol and must solve a murder, while his actions are shaped by a colorful palette of personality traits that literally converse with him and comment on the world around him. There is no traditional combat system — all progress happens through text-based skill checks and conversations, and even a single conversation can fundamentally change the direction of the entire investigation.
The Final Cut, which arrived on Xbox Series X and S in 2021, added full voice acting for nearly all characters, new quest lines, and political factions, opening the text-heavy game even further to players who might otherwise be intimidated by the amount of reading. A visual style reminiscent of oil paintings and melancholic, jazz-tinged music round out the depressing yet fascinating atmosphere of a crumbling city that still bears the scars of a long-lost revolution. On top of that, the detective character is capable of sabotaging himself through his own vices, giving the game an unexpectedly comic yet also tragic dimension, and the decision whether he tries to redeem himself or sinks further into self-destruction is one of the strongest moments in the whole story.
Upon release, Disco Elysium received exceptionally positive reception and was repeatedly called one of the best-written RPGs, thanks to the depth of its writing, dark humor, and the courage to tackle political themes without oversimplifying them. Its influence can be seen in a number of later narrative RPGs that attempt to imitate its system of inner voices. On Xbox Series, the game remains just as powerful an experience as it was on release — it's a title that proves genuinely good writing can replace even the most elaborate combat mechanics.
Why play it: Anyone looking for an RPG where writing and dialogue matter more than combat will find in Disco Elysium one of the best-written titles in the genre, period.
