Star Ocean: The Last Hope
Star Ocean: The Last Hope is a space RPG set in the aftermath of a devastating war on Earth, when humanity sends out exploration ships in search of a new home. The player commands a young officer who gradually discovers planets inhabited by different civilizations, forges alliances, and encounters a threat far greater than the original one. The series has always combined sci-fi with classic fantasy, and this installment continues that: one moment the player walks the deck of a starship, the next stands in a medieval town where no one has any idea where they came from. Alongside the main story, it offers an enormous amount of side content, from item crafting to hidden super-bosses.
Battles take place in real time in an open arena, with the player controlling one character directly while the others follow assigned commands. The key mechanic is the so-called blindside, dodging in an arc around an enemy and attacking from behind, which opens the door to chaining powerful attacks. Added to this are bonus dice that increase experience or money gains for the whole battle and shatter when the character is hit, so the game rewards not getting struck. The crafting system is deep to the point of obsession, letting players make gear noticeably stronger than anything found. On the Xbox 360, the game shipped across several discs and technically ranked among the most ambitious Japanese titles on the platform, with sprawling locations and large numbers of enemies on screen.
Reviews praised the combat system and scope, while criticism targeted naively written characters and long dialogue scenes. Still, the game mattered for the Xbox 360 as one of the big Japanese RPGs that arrived there before elsewhere, helping the brand keep an audience outside Japan too. Today it plays like a classic, honestly long genre RPG where the main reward is gradually understanding the combat rules and building your own gear. Anyone who likes hundred-hour games will find exactly that here.
