Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution
Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution is an attempt to bring the sprawling turn-based strategy of civilization-building to consoles without leaving it a watered-down imitation. The player picks a nation with its own bonuses, founds their first city in prehistory, and pushes all the way to the space age through researching technologies, building wonders, diplomacy, and war. The core of the series remains intact: every turn brings decisions about where to send settlers, what to research, and whether it's worth declaring war on a neighbor or better to strike a trade deal. Victory can be reached four ways, militarily, culturally, economically, or by conquering space, and each demands a different playstyle.
The main change is pacing. Maps are smaller, unit counts lower, city management simplified, and a whole match can be finished in a couple of hours, so the game works even for someone unwilling to devote an entire weekend to a single campaign. Controls were designed directly for a gamepad, and the cursor moves across the hex map surprisingly naturally, with clear menus and quick jumping between units waiting for orders. Micromanagement was cut down, while lavish unit animations were added along with an exaggerated, comic-book-styled look for leaders who mock the player when an offer is refused. Technically it's an undemanding but nicely readable title that ran without a hitch on the Xbox 360, and its music keeps the ceremonial tone familiar from the series.
Reviews received it as good proof that complex strategy can work on consoles, even though series veterans found it lacking in depth. That very simplification later fed back into how the main series itself streamlined its interface and lowered management demands. Today Civilization Revolution is one of the most playable strategy games in the console's catalog, ideal for short evening sessions and for playing together in front of one TV.
