An action horror game set under the African sun, playable solo or in two-player co-op.

Resident Evil 5 moved the series from dark corridors into the scorching African sun, and at the same time turned it into a game for two. Chris Redfield arrives in the fictional region of Kijuju to investigate a trade in bioweapons, and at his side stands Sheva Alomar, controlled either by AI or by a second player, whether on the same screen or online. Cooperation runs through everything: players hand each other ammo, heal one another, open doors together, and cover each other while reloading, turning horror into a tense action game about teamwork.

The controls stayed faithful to the fourth game, so you can't move while aiming, the inventory is handled in real time, and enemies charge forward in mobs armed with machetes and shovels. That creates a specific kind of tension, where the player has to decide whether to fire one more shot or fall back instead. Alongside the campaign, the game offered a beautifully tuned Mercenaries mode, all about the highest possible score within a time limit, which for many players lasted longer than the story itself. Technically, Resident Evil 5 ranked among the best-looking titles on the Xbox 360, with sharp lighting and detailed models, and the soundtrack pushed the series from horror whispers toward orchestral action.

Sales-wise it was a huge success, but critics were more divided: they praised the cooperation and technical execution, while criticizing the loss of the horror identity, controls that felt clunky given the pace of the action, and a questionable depiction of the African setting, which sparked public debate. The influence on the series was decisive, as it cemented the action direction that Resident Evil kept returning to for a long time afterward. Today it's a game best played with two people, where the dated controls give way to the joy of clearing crowds together. For fans of the series, the ending also carries extraordinary weight, closing a long thread running back to the earliest entries, and the final showdown ranks among the most memorable climaxes Capcom has ever built. Played as a duo, Resident Evil 5 remains a rewarding evening title to this day.
