Submachine

Adventura 2005 Mateusz Skutnik ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h

Atmospheric escape series about a mysterious machine; one of the most ambitious Flash adventures.

Submachine is one of the largest and most atmospheric Flash adventure games ever made for the web. The player finds themselves in abandoned, industrial-looking spaces full of pipes, gears, and mysterious machines, trying to escape by combining items, solving puzzles, and carefully examining the surroundings. Controls are purely mouse-based — you click on places you want to move to and objects you want to interact with — and the game relies mainly on mood and the gradual revelation of a larger mystery hidden behind each room.

Polish author Mateusz Skutnik developed the series across many installments, each adding a piece to the puzzle about the mysterious machine whose true purpose and origin remain shrouded in a mystery reminiscent of sci-fi and existential questions. This ambition set the series apart from most escape games of the time, which were content with a single isolated room; Submachine instead builds a cohesive world with its own mythology, which players dissected on forums and wikis dedicated entirely to theories about its meaning.

The series' length and depth allowed Submachine to survive even after Flash's decline thanks to ports and continuations on other platforms, a rarity among Flash titles of the mid-2000s. It remains to this day one of the most-cited examples that a Flash game could have ambitions comparable to a full-fledged adventure game.

Why play it: For fans of atmospheric escape games with a slow pace and a mysterious story — it requires patience, but rewards it with a dense atmosphere.
