A turn-based RPG with a dark zombie-apocalypse story; an unexpectedly dense combat system.

Sonny from 2008 brought an unusually dense turn-based RPG to a Flash portal, set in a dark zombie-apocalypse world where the main hero wakes up without memories in the middle of a military facility full of the infected. Combat played out in a turn-based system with a choice of attacks, defenses, and special abilities depending on the chosen character class, which felt more like a classic console RPG than a typical simple Flash minigame.

Krin Juangbhanich proved with this game that even within the limited space of a browser game, it's possible to build an elaborate combat system with a deep skill tree and meaningful character progression over time. The story's dark tone, its bleak visual style, and its emphasis on tactics over reflexes set Sonny apart from most of the Flash competition of the time, which focused mainly on fast action or simple puzzles, earning it a loyal audience looking for a longer, more demanding experience.

The success of the first part led to a sequel that further developed the story and combat system, adding new classes and mechanics. Sonny thus remains proof that even on Flash portals, usually associated with short, casual games, an ambitious RPG with its own world and elaborate gameplay could emerge.

Why play it: Recommended for players who want to experience a surprisingly deep turn-based RPG right in the browser and don't mind a darker, zombie-themed story.
