Time Fcuk

Plošinovka 2009 Edmund McMillen ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h

A dark, surreal platformer about playing with shadows and time from the creator of Binding of Isaac.

Time Fcuk from 2009 brought a dark, surreal platformer from Edmund McMillen, creator of the later game The Binding of Isaac, built on an unusual mechanic of playing with shadows and time. The player controlled a character able to switch between the present and the past, with objects and obstacles differing between the two layers, so solving each puzzle required thinking about how the level changes when switching time planes, not just about moving left and right.

The game's visual style relied on a dark, unsettling look with sharp black-and-white contrasts, reflecting McMillen's later work and his fondness for themes of psychological anxiety and existential confusion. Time Fcuk wasn't a typical casual Flash game - it emphasized atmosphere and puzzle design beyond the usual simplicity of portal titles, making it a more striking and demanding experience than most of the competition at the time.

The game became one of the steps on McMillen's path toward his later, much better-known projects, and fans of his work still look to it today for early hints of the themes and style he would later fully develop. Time Fcuk thus functions mainly as an interesting stop in the history of one of the most distinctive indie creators, rather than as a standalone, massively played title of its time.

Why play it: Interesting mainly for fans of Edmund McMillen who want to see early hints of his later style in an unconventional, puzzle-focused platformer about shadows and time.
