Every Day the Same Dream

Adventura 2009 Molleindustria ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h

An existential art game about the drabness of routine; one of the web's first "walking sim" experiences.

Every Day the Same Dream puts the player in the shoes of an employee trapped in the same cycle over and over - waking up, driving to work, the elevator, the office. The controls are minimalist, directional arrows and a single action, yet the game gradually offers small deviations from the routine that change the course of the day and its meaning. Each playthrough takes only a few minutes, but repetition here is a deliberate stylistic device, not a limitation. At any point in the day, the player can deviate from the established order - go somewhere other than the elevator, or notice something unusual along the way - and every such detour pushes the story a little further.

Gray, deliberately drab graphics and a quiet atmosphere underscore the central theme - the alienation and emptiness of modern working life. The game uses no dialogue or explanatory text; instead, it lets the player discover alternatives to the everyday cycle through their own observation and experimentation with the environment. It was precisely this approach that foreshadowed the later so-called "walking simulators," which relied on atmosphere and interpretation instead of action. The absence of any score or time limit further underscores that the goal isn't to win, but to notice the small details that offer an escape from the closed cycle.

Behind the title stands the Italian studio Molleindustria, known for its socially critical approach to games, and Every Day the Same Dream from 2009 is one of its most frequently cited works. In the context of web games of the time, it was one of the first striking examples that a browser game could be an openly political and existential commentary, not just a few minutes of entertainment. Every Day the Same Dream is still cited today as one of the earliest proofs that even a short, seemingly modest game can carry a powerful social message.

Why play it: Anyone in the mood for a short, thoughtful experience about routine and escaping it will find one of the most influential art titles of the web era in this game.
