Card duels that gradually turn into a dark, multi-layered horror full of twists.

Inscryption is a card game that, under the guise of a seemingly ordinary dueling system, gradually turns into a dark, multi-layered horror full of mysteries and unexpected twists. The player sits at a table across from a mysterious figure and plays card duels where animal cards with their own stats and abilities fight for survival - sacrificing each other, gaining power from the bones of previously fallen allies, with their value shaped by rules the player gradually learns for themselves. It soon turns out, however, that the game also operates outside the cards themselves, with escape-room elements, manipulation of the file system, and references to the author's earlier works. Being divided into several distinctly different chapters gradually changes the rules and visual style so much that the player never knows what comes next - a peaceful card match can transform without warning into an entirely different kind of game.

The game arrived on Switch somewhat later than on PC, but the port preserved the original's nervous, claustrophobic atmosphere - dim lighting, the creaking sounds of a wooden cabin, and the narrator's voice watching the player work just as evocatively on the handheld as on a large monitor. Controlling the cards is clear both on the touchscreen and with the Joy-Cons, even though the game wasn't primarily designed for consoles, and playing in the dark with headphones only heightens the oppressive atmosphere.

Inscryption received very positive reviews on release, especially for its boldness in constantly subverting player expectations and for its thoughtful blending of card mechanics with horror storytelling. It became an example of how the card-game genre can be pushed toward an authorial, strongly narrative experience, and thanks to the Switch version it also found an audience among players who don't normally seek out horror but were lured in by its unconventional concept. To this day it's discussed as a game best played without any prior knowledge of what awaits.

Why play it: Anyone who appreciates card mechanics interwoven with thoughtful horror storytelling that constantly shatters expectations should play Inscryption without any prior knowledge of what's coming.
