The character attacks on its own, the player just collects experience; a defenseless hero becomes an army within minutes.

Vampire Survivors is an action roguelike in which the player's character automatically attacks swarms of enemies, while the player's job is simply to move around the arenas, collect experience, and choose between the weapons and upgrades on offer. From this simple concept, in which the screen gradually fills with hundreds to thousands of enemies, an unexpectedly deep system of synergies between weapons and passive items emerges, turning a defenseless little character into a force that wipes out the entire screen within a few dozen minutes. Unlockable characters, maps, and secret weapon combinations also give the game very high replayability even after clearing the first run. Between expeditions the player also spends collected gold on permanent upgrades, so even an unsuccessful run contributes to progress on the next attempt.

The Switch version kept the low price and fast pace that made the game famous, and the handheld's portability proved to be a natural fit for short, addictive sessions squeezed between other obligations. The retro pixel art with its limited color palette runs smoothly even when the screen is literally overflowing with enemies and effects, which is technically impressive given the number of simulated objects at once. The chiptune music rounds out the nostalgic, arcade atmosphere, a deliberate contrast to the modern, deeper mechanics underneath.

On Switch and elsewhere, the game kicked off a wave of so-called "bullet heaven" titles that flipped the classic bullet hell formula - instead of dodging bullets, the player floods the screen with their own barrage. Vampire Survivors became a phenomenon thanks to the combination of its low price, immediate accessibility, and enormous replayability, and it's still cited today as the title that founded its own subgenre, whose influence is visible in the dozens of games that followed it.

Why play it: Thanks to its low price, immediate accessibility, and enormous replayability, Vampire Survivors founded its own bullet heaven subgenre and remains a clear choice for anyone who wants to see where it all began.
