A detective puzzle about reconstructing a ship's crew's fates using only observation and logical deduction.

Return of the Obra Dinn puts the player in the role of an insurance investigator who, in 1807, walks through an abandoned trading ship that has mysteriously returned to port without its crew. Using a pocket watch with the ability to send the player back to the moment of each character's death, they must piece together fragments, frozen scenes, and snippets of conversation to reconstruct the fates of every crew member - who died, how, by whose hand, and when - based purely on observation, listening, and logical deduction, with no additional hints. The game never tells the player whether their conclusion is correct until they've verified enough irrefutable evidence themselves, which makes it one of the most demanding detective games of its kind, where the main tools are a pencil, paper, and patience.

Visually the game uses striking monochrome graphics inspired by old computer monitors, which on Switch look sharp and legible despite the low resolution of the retro style, while also giving the whole ship an unmistakable, slightly eerie look. The Switch version arrived somewhat later than on other platforms, but carried the game over without changes to the mechanics, and handheld mode proved pleasant for focused, longer investigation sessions, letting the player re-examine already visited scenes at any time. The sound design - the creaking of the ship, snippets of conversation, and atmospheric music - plays a key role in reconstructing each individual scene and uncovering the connections between them.

Return of the Obra Dinn was praised by critics on release as an exceptionally original detective experience, and its creator built on his existing reputation as a maker of unconventional mechanics. The game is still considered one of the high points of the logic-adventure genre and an example of how an entire game can be built on trust in the player's ability to observe closely, listen, and piece the facts together themselves, without ever being led by the hand.

Why play it: For detective-story lovers who want to piece a case together from nothing but observation, listening, and their own judgment, without any hand-holding whatsoever.
