A fast action shooter about resource management; the chainsaw refills ammo, melee finishers restore health.

DOOM Eternal is the sequel to the rebooted series that pushed first-person shooting into the form of a fast action game about resource management. The player once again takes on the role of the Doom Slayer, blasting through hordes of demons on Earth and beyond, but this time it's not just about aiming. Every weapon and ability gives something different: the chainsaw restocks ammo, the flamethrower knocks armor off hit enemies, and brutal melee finishers restore health. If the player stops or starts holding back, resources run out and death follows, so the only way forward is to keep attacking and switch tools according to what's needed at that moment.

Compared to its predecessor, mobility is far more pronounced. A double jump, air dash, grappling hook, and monkey bars turn arena fights into a three-dimensional dance where the player is constantly moving above enemies' heads. Stronger demons have weak points that can be shot off, giving combat a logic of priorities: disable the healer first, then the one shooting from range. Between arenas, the game weaves in platforming sections and searches for hidden upgrades. The Switch port was handled by Panic Button, and the result is a remarkable compromise, that is, lower resolution scaled to the load and a lower frame rate than on other platforms, but combat readability and the full campaign content are preserved.

The atmosphere is built from a combination of raw metal music, metallic environments, and a story that deliberately takes itself with comic-book seriousness. Reception was strongly positive, the game was called one of the best action titles of its generation, though some players had reservations about the sheer number of mechanics piled on top of each other and the platforming inserts. Today Eternal stands as the peak of one approach to shooters: no cover, no rest, just constant motion. On Switch, it's also one of the most demanding titles ever gotten running on the console, and for that alone it deserves attention even from people who already know it from elsewhere.
