A physics sandbox from the creators of Boneworks; swapping bodies changes how you fight and move.

Bonelab is a physics-driven action game from studio Stress Level Zero, following on from their previous title Boneworks, and it released on Meta Quest in 2022 fundamentally reworked for a standalone headset. The player moves through a sandbox environment where nearly every object responds to physics - weapons have real weight, shell casings fall to the ground, and fighting opponents feels more like wrestling with puppets than a traditional shooter. The key mechanic is the avatar system: the player can switch at any time between different bodies with different proportions, strength, and abilities, which fundamentally changes how they move, climb, and fight. Melee combat also combines physically simulated weapons with grabbing improvised objects from the surroundings, so a thrown brick or a torn-off table leg is just as valid a weapon as prepared gear.

Technically, it is one of the most ambitious titles on Quest, because physics simulation on a mobile chip requires compromises - the graphics were simplified compared to the PC version, but the gameplay of the physical interactions remains functional and surprisingly stable. The story is intentionally fragmentary and mainly serves as a framework for a series of experimental arenas, between which the player moves using a so-called Node space that functions as a central hub. The sound design and atmosphere lean on the raw, industrial feel that continues Boneworks' aesthetic, and the game also offers a set of standalone minigames and arcade challenges outside the main campaign as a break from the free-form sandbox.

After release, the game received a mixed but respectful reception - critics praised the technical boldness and physics-based gameplay, while some players felt the story lacked clarity and the pacing lacked balance. In the modding community, Bonelab became a popular platform thanks to the open Marrow tool, which allows creating custom avatars, weapons, maps, and entire game mods. It is still considered one of the technically most interesting sandbox titles on Quest and a reference point for physics-based VR gameplay, around which a long-lived and active creative community has grown.

Why play it: For fans of physics sandboxes and modding, who will be drawn in by the open Marrow tool for custom avatars, weapons, and maps, even though the story and pacing aren't the game's main strength.
