Red Matter 2
Red Matter 2 is the direct sequel to Vertical Robot's atmospheric sci-fi adventure, which arrived on Meta Quest in 2022 and pushed the series' visual and gameplay quality another level higher. The player once again explores vast, abandoned complexes of a fictional communist regime, this time on the moon and other exotic locations, solving spatial puzzles built around operating machinery, transferring energy, and linking systems, complemented by new tools such as a grappling hook that allows faster movement through the environment. Compared to the first game, the level design is more open and offers greater freedom in the order in which the player progresses through the individual sections.
The visuals are among the best the Quest has to offer - detailed models, realistic materials, and lighting feel unexpectedly advanced on a headset without a PC connection, and the scenery of the lunar surface and interior complexes ranks among the most impressive on the platform. Vertical Robot drew on experience from the previous game for smoother optimization, so the game runs stably even in more demanding scenes full of detail. The story builds on the mystery of the red matter substance and expands it into a broader sci-fi narrative with Cold War elements, accompanied by cinematic music and quality voice acting that gives the game an almost cinematic feel.
Reviews of the game were very positive at launch, praising both the graphical leap and the well-balanced puzzles with a pleasant pace and smooth story revelation. Red Matter 2 became one of the reference titles for showcasing what a standalone headset is technically capable of, and together with the first game, it forms one of the most acclaimed and best-rated adventure series on the Quest platform. The game later arrived on other platforms as well, including PSVR2, confirming that it is a title that can hold its own even compared to more production-heavy sci-fi adventures outside mobile VR.
Why play it: For fans of sci-fi adventures craving the visually most ambitious title on Quest, with well-balanced puzzles and smooth storytelling comparable even to costlier games outside mobile VR.
