GORN
GORN is a physics-based gladiator brawler from Free Lives that arrived on Meta Quest in 2020 and became famous chiefly for its grotesque, comic-book brutality exaggerated to the point of parody. The player finds themselves in arenas full of opponents and fights using weapons ranging from swords, hammers, and axes to their own fists, with all movement and hits handled by physics simulation - severed limbs, exaggeratedly springy bodies, and clumsy but comical fights are a direct result of this approach, not scripted animations. The game does not take itself seriously, and the humor arising from physics mishaps, such as your own weapon bouncing back into your face, is one of its main selling points.
On Quest, the game runs smoothly thanks to a relatively simple visual style reminiscent of a raw comic book, with a bold color palette of blood and arena sand. As the player progresses, they unlock new weapons and more demanding arenas with thematically distinct opponents, with difficulty rising alongside the number and strength of foes in a single round. Short rounds make it easy to play in small bursts, which makes GORN a popular choice for quick physical fun as well as a showcase title through which new VR users get acquainted with physical interaction.
After launch, GORN became one of the most-shared VR titles thanks to viral clips of clumsy but immensely entertaining fights, and it is still cited today as a prime example of how physical humor can work better in VR than in any other medium. The game also inspired a number of other physics-based combat titles that tried to replicate a similar sense of uncontrolled chaos with varying degrees of success. Over the years, the developers have added further weapons, arenas, and game modes, so GORN remains one of the first games Quest owners install when they want to show friends what physical VR can do.
Why play it: For players who want to show friends what physical VR can do - chaotic, immensely entertaining fights that make for great viral clips.
