A board-game dungeon crawler in VR; cooperative turn-based battles with miniatures on a virtual tabletop.

Demeo is a cooperative board-game dungeon crawler from Resolution Games that arrived on Meta Quest in 2021, bringing the tabletop board-game experience directly into virtual reality. Players look down at a miniature battlefield from above, move figures, cast spells, and fight monsters in a turn-based manner similar to classic dungeon crawlers and tabletop RPGs like Descent or HeroQuest. A round consists of action cards, movement across a grid map, and tactical positioning of characters ranging from warrior to ranger to sorcerer, creating depth comparable to a full-fledged board game, just without the need to physically set up components.

A strong point is the social dimension - the game supports multiple players together in a shared virtual space, where they see each other as avatars around the table, talk to one another, and plan moves together, making it one of the best reasons for social VR even for players who otherwise avoid multiplayer titles. Visually, Demeo is styled with a cozy, richly colored fantasy aesthetic with quality lighting effects on the figures and environment, running smoothly on Quest even with multiple connected players at once. The music and sound effects support both the tension of combat and the relaxed atmosphere of sitting together at the virtual table.

The game was very well received after launch as one of the model examples of a multiplayer VR experience, and gradually gained expansions with new chapters, dungeons, and game modes, including the ability to play outside VR on a flat-screen display. Demeo is now considered one of the pivotal titles that showed VR can not only replicate board games but actually enhance the experience thanks to the presence of friends in one virtual space. Resolution Games later also offered a version of the game for players without a headset, who can join the table on a flat display, further expanding the circle of people with whom a single session can be played.

Why play it: For a group of friends looking for a board-game session in virtual reality - thanks to the headset-free version, practically anyone can join the same table.
