Street Fighter 6
Street Fighter 6 marked Capcom's return to form after years in which the previous entry, Street Fighter V, was hampered by a slow pace of content. The game offers three distinct modes — the classic Fighting Ground for training and matches, an online Battle Hub resembling a virtual arcade with avatars, and an extensive story mode called World Tour, in which the player creates their own character, roams an open city full of side quests, and gradually learns techniques from legendary masters throughout the series, including Ryu and Chun-Li.
The combat system is built around a new mechanic called the Drive Gauge, which links defensive and offensive techniques into a single shared resource and forces players to constantly choose between aggression and caution, pushing the game closer to modern, more accessible fighting games. The system also includes powerful Drive Impact strikes capable of breaking through an opponent's guard, and so-called Perfect Parries, which, when timed precisely, open up room for a devastating counterattack. The visual style combines more realistic character models with bold color effects and a street-graffiti aesthetic, giving the game a fresh identity compared to its more austerely styled predecessor. On PS5 the game runs smoothly at high resolution and uses an online infrastructure with quality rollback netcode, making long-distance matches nearly imperceptibly lag-free.
Critics particularly praised the depth of the combat system, the elaborate World Tour mode, and its accessibility for newcomers thanks to the simplified Modern control scheme, without that limiting players who prefer classic controls with all the traditional command inputs. The Battle Hub also earned praise for successfully bringing the feeling of a shared arcade, familiar to players from the arcade halls of past decades, back into an online environment. Street Fighter 6 became one of the pillars of the competitive fighting game scene and remains a regular tournament title at major esports events to this day, confirming its lasting influence on the entire genre.
Why play it: For both newcomers and fighting game veterans, Street Fighter 6 offers the depth of classic controls as well as the accessibility of the Modern scheme, complemented by a Battle Hub that brings back the feeling of a shared arcade from the halls of past decades.
