A more aggressive, faster Tekken thanks to the Heat mechanic; the Mishima clan's vendetta continues.

Tekken 8 continues the long-running saga of the Mishima clan's family vendetta, adding the son of the series' main hero, Jin Kazama, as the central character in a story about stopping an apocalyptic conflict between father and son. The combat system is built around a new mechanic called Heat, which temporarily strengthens attacking options, enables special moves, and allows for more aggressive, more fluid combat than in previous entries, which were known more for cautious, technical play focused on spacing and waiting for the opponent's mistake. The classic roster of twenty-plus characters is further rounded out by newcomers as well as the return of fan-favorite fighters from earlier entries in the series.

The graphics engine, built on Unreal Engine, looks visually stunning on PlayStation 5 — from realistic faces to destructible environments and dynamic weather and rain that changes arena behavior mid-match and gives the setting a cinematic feel. The game also includes an extensive story mode called Arcade Quest, which guides newcomers through the basics of the combat system and the series' history via stylized comic-book-style storytelling. The soundtrack combines electronic and orchestral elements, and together with elaborate character animation gives the series a sense of drama without sacrificing the speed and readability needed for competitive play at the highest level.

Tekken 8 was received by critics as one of the most accessible entries in the series thanks to assist control schemes and training tools for newcomers, without sacrificing depth for advanced players accustomed to complex combos and mix-ups. The extensive roster of characters, many of whom have accompanied the series since the nineties, also gives players the chance to find their own style among dozens of distinct fighters. It quickly established itself as a pillar of the competitive fighting-game esports scene alongside Street Fighter and continues to receive regular updates and new fighters to this day, confirming its status as one of the genre's key franchises on the current console generation.

Why play it: For newcomers and advanced players alike, Tekken 8 offers assist control schemes and training tools without sacrificing depth for complex combos, making it one of the genre's key franchises of the current generation.
