The Phantom Thieves in grid-based tactics reminiscent of XCOM; cover decides the battle.

Persona 5 Tactica is a tactical spin-off from the main series that shifts the Phantom Thieves from turn-based combat into a grid-based tactics genre reminiscent of XCOM. The player controls Joker and his companions from Persona 5 in a new, self-contained kingdom, where they must advance using cover, exploit height advantages, and combine Persona abilities to trigger flashy group attacks called All-Out Attacks. The party is also joined by a new ally whose special ability opens up further tactical options for flanking enemies and taking over their positions on the map, while the player plans equipment and character placement between battles according to the type of upcoming fight and the terrain available on the map.

The game retains the series' stylized comic-book art and jazzy, pop-inflected music, and on PS5 it runs smoothly, with short transitions between exploration, dialogue, and battles divided into individual chapters. Compared to the main entries, Tactica is significantly shorter and more accessible, with simpler maps and fewer combat variables, making it a good entry point for players who were intimidated by the scope of the classic Persona games but want to experience the same visual style, characters, and atmosphere of rebellion against authority. Outside the main story, the game also offers side challenges and costume collecting that reference previous entries in the series.

Critics praised the title especially for its elegant blend of the tactics genre with the series' identity, and for the fact that, despite being a spin-off with a shorter playtime, it offers a meaningful story about freedom and rebellion against an oppressive regime. Today it is seen as a successful, if smaller, experiment that shows the Persona brand can work even outside its traditional gameplay framework and reach fans of different genres who might not have picked up the series' larger entries on their own.

Why play it: For Persona fans willing to try the series outside its traditional framework — an elegant tactical spin-off with a shorter playtime but a meaningful story about rebellion against oppression.
