HD-2D graphics blend pixel art with 3D depth; eight stories intertwine in a single world.

Octopath Traveler II is a JRPG with so-called HD-2D graphics, combining pixel-art characters with a three-dimensional environment, depth of field, and lighting effects that on PlayStation 5 stand out with a sharp image even in detailed night scenes accompanied by dynamic weather. The game offers eight independent main characters with their own storylines that intertwine across a shared world and can temporarily join one another's parties, along with a turn-based combat system built around exploiting enemies' elemental and weapon weaknesses and the so-called Boost system, which lets players stockpile points for a devastating chain of attacks or empower a single strike for a decisive blow against bosses, turning every battle into a question of properly timed risk and reward.

Beyond combat, the game places emphasis on interacting with town residents using each character's unique abilities, such as challenging someone to a duel, stealing items, gathering information, or hiring helpers into the party, which gives the world a sense of reactivity and offers several ways to resolve the same situation depending on which character the player is currently leading. Composer Yasunori Nishiki once again delivered both melancholic and energetic pieces that rank among the most praised parts of the game and beautifully complement the atmosphere of eight interconnected adventures unfolding across the sprawling continent of Solistia, with its distinct biomes and cultures.

At launch the second installment was received as a refinement of the first Octopath Traveler thanks to better interwoven storylines, a fine-tuned combat system, and new day-and-night mechanics that affect available shops and the behavior of townspeople. Today it is considered one of the most visually distinctive modern JRPGs and proof that retro-inspired graphics can look thoroughly fresh on current hardware while remaining legible even after dozens of hours of play.

Why play it: For JRPG lovers who appreciate the genre's most visually distinctive titles, it offers a refined sequel with more thoughtfully interwoven stories and a day-and-night mechanic.
